"If the problem is the workplace, you can't say, 'let's teach physicians mindfulness' and expect it to fix the problem. I think mindfulness is a great skill to have, but it implies that you are the problem and you have to change." - Jodi Eckleberry-Hunt

Someone recently told me that she didn't understand why she wasn't handling work better, why it was so overwhelming. What's wrong with her that she's not dealing with it better?

There are no beds in the hospital. The ER waiting room is overflowing with patients waiting more than 10 hours. We are understaffed in all areas. Covid is ramping up. Not to mention the year of isolation, missing our friends and families, navigating our new normal.

The problem is not you. You are allowed to be angry when you're not provided with proper staffing. You're allowed to feel overwhelmed when you get behind, regardless of the number of patients you're seeing. You shouldn't feel weak because you cried on the way home.

This job was incredibly difficult, physically and emotionally, before Covid. How you're feeling now has nothing to do with your character or your strength.

WEEKLY WELLNESS TIP: This week, recognize how hard this job is, and has become over the last year. Look around. You're not alone. We're all struggling. The problem is not you. There is nothing wrong with the way you feel.
